The Reverse Osmosis (RO) industry has experienced several technological improvements including developments in pretreatments using ultrafiltration among many others. The most significant improvements have been due to the Reverse Osmosis (RO) (RO) membranes themselves which have been modified to have improved water permeability and a higher rejection for polyamide seawater membranes thereby reducing salt passage. These advancements, as well as others, are discussed throughout this article and ideas for new directions of RO applications and technologies are proposed.
