With growing fabrication facilities, there is a corresponding increase in the potential effluent industrial wastewater impact on the
Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) biological processes. For example, corrosion inhibitors commonly used in cooling towers
often use triazole-based chemistries which are highly effective at protecting copper surfaces, but residual triazoles are toxic to
aquatic species and nitrifying bacteria at certain concentrations. At one facility, Intel explored opportunities to expand operations
without increasing triazole load to the POTW, while maintaining effective corrosion control. This change can help mitigate the
impact growth will have on the communities and associated utilities that surround these facilities.
