The recent elevated costs of boiler chemical cleanings has propelled efforts to develop ways in which to reduce iron corrosion product formation and transport to the boiler. As the majority of the metal transport to a boiler originates from the pre-boiler system the coal-fired generating station, referenced in this article, is replacing original copper metal based feedwater heaters with iron metal-based feedwater heaters. Thus to minimize iron products transport to the boiler and corrosion, a change in the pre-boiler chemistry by changing the type of metallurgy in the pre-boiler system is required. This article explores such changes and details the study design as well as the testing process and Unit 1 results.
